Loose Leaf Tea vs. Tea Bags: Cost per Cup (With Calculator)

Posted by Ricardo R. Matos, Founder of Tea The World on Oct 10th 2026

Per cup, basic supermarket tea bags are usually the cheapest option, often around 5 to 15 cents a cup. Premium loose leaf tea typically costs more per gram, but because a good whole leaf can be re-steeped 2 to 3 times, its real cost per cup often lands close to, or below, premium tea bags. And for flavor, freshness and less packaging waste, loose leaf usually comes out ahead.

How to calculate your cost per cup

You can work out the cost of any tea in under a minute:

  1. Find the price per gram: divide the package price by its weight in grams (1 oz = about 28 g).
  2. Multiply by the amount per cup: most loose leaf teas use about 2 to 3 grams per 8 oz cup.
  3. Divide by the number of steeps: if the leaves give two good cups, halve the cost.

Example

Say a loose leaf tea costs $18 for 3 oz (about 85 g). That's about 21 cents per gram. At 2.5 g per cup, one serving costs about 53 cents. Steep it twice and each cup costs about 27 cents. Steep a quality oolong three times and it drops to about 18 cents.

What you get for the money

Flavor

Loose leaf tea is usually made from whole or large pieces of leaf. These keep more of their aromatic oils and unfold fully in water, giving a fuller, more layered cup. Most standard tea bags contain finely cut leaf, sometimes called fannings or dust, which brews fast but tends to taste flatter and more bitter.

Freshness

Whole leaves have less exposed surface area, so they stay fresh longer when stored in an airtight container away from light, heat and moisture.

Waste

Loose leaf tea skips the individual bag, string, tag and wrapper. Spent leaves can go straight into compost. Some tea bags, especially certain mesh or pyramid styles, contain plastic, so check the packaging if that matters to you.

One-time equipment

To brew loose leaf, you need an infuser, a teapot with a built-in strainer, or paper tea filters. A good metal infuser lasts for years, so its cost per cup is close to zero over time.

When tea bags make sense

Tea bags are convenient for travel, the office, or when you need a cup in a hurry. Many people keep both: loose leaf for the daily ritual and tea bags or sachets for on the go.

Both formats from Tea The World

All Tea The World pouches contain loose leaf tea, and all of our tins contain tea sachets, so you can choose the format that fits your day. Brew loose leaf easily with our Tea Pockets or a glass teapot with an infuser.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups are in an ounce of loose leaf tea?

About 10 to 14 cups from a single steep, based on 2 to 3 grams per cup. Re-steeping can double or triple that.

Is loose leaf tea healthier than tea bags?

Both come from the same plants. Loose leaf often tastes better and may contain more intact leaf, but there isn't strong evidence that one is meaningfully healthier than the other.

How many times can I re-steep loose leaf tea?

It depends on the tea. See our guide: Can you reuse tea leaves?
