Fall in Love with Chai: How to Make Authentic Masala Chai

Introduction to Masala Chai

If you're a tea lover, you've probably heard of masala chai. This fragrant, spiced drink is a cherished daily ritual across India. At Tea The World, we love celebrating tea traditions, and masala chai is one of the most comforting.

What Is Masala Chai?

Masala chai means "spiced tea." It's made by simmering black tea with aromatic spices, milk and sweetener. Every family has its own spice blend, so every cup reflects personal taste.

The Ingredients You'll Need

  • Black tea: A strong, malty black tea such as Assam is traditional. For a shortcut, our Masala Chai loose leaf already blends black tea with spices.
  • Spices: Cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, fresh ginger and black pepper are common.
  • Milk: Whole milk is traditional, but oat, almond or other milks work too.
  • Sweetener: Sugar, jaggery or honey to taste.

Step-by-Step Guide (Serves 2)

  1. Crush the spices: Lightly crush 3-4 cardamom pods, a small piece of cinnamon, 2 cloves and a few peppercorns, and slice a thumb of fresh ginger.
  2. Simmer: Bring 1 cup of water and the spices to a boil, then simmer 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add tea: Add 2 teaspoons of black tea and simmer 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add milk: Pour in 1 cup of milk and bring back to a gentle boil, watching so it doesn't boil over.
  5. Sweeten: Stir in sweetener to taste.
  6. Strain and serve: Strain through a fine sieve into cups and enjoy hot.

Using our Masala Chai blend? Skip the spices and simmer 2-3 teaspoons of the blend in water, then add milk and sweetener as above.

Tips for the Perfect Chai

  • Adjust the spices: More ginger for heat, more cardamom for fragrance.
  • Use fresh spices: Whole, freshly crushed spices give the best aroma.
  • Make it iced: Brew strong, chill and pour over ice with cold milk.
